This Month on The Artists' Wall - Photographer, Marshall Angus

Nazareth 2005. © Marshall Angus
Born and raised in Cambridge, Marshall Angus grew up in the entertainment industry. Working for his father's production company, Marshall made connections with many artists who have traveled through the area. He started shooting photographs of bands in 2005 at a venue called the Parking Lot, just up the street from the Groove Kitchen. Though he prefers shooting live acts, Marshall also does promotional photos and headshots for bands and actors from the tri-city area and beyond. He has covered such events as the St. Catharine's Scene Festival and Guelph's Hillside Festival working with Truth Explosion magazine out of Toronto.

In 2006, he joined the organizing committee for Rock the Mill, an annual music festival held in Cambridge. His work with the committee over the past 3 years has helped the event grow into the largest one-day music festival in the tri-city area.

Marshall studied Advertising and Marketing at Conestoga College and focuses mostly on online marketing. He is currently working with Waterloo-based Will Currie and the Country French, acting as manager and front of house sound engineer. He is also working on several projects with members of Tokyo Police Club and The Born Ruffians.

Roaming Reviews Canadian Blues Artist Michael Pickett at The Groove Kitchen and Music Room in Preston, Cambridge Ontario. February 5, 2009.

Feb 8th, 2009 | By Marcia Dawson

The House on King Street in Preston was more than prepared to host in its own Kitchen, the Legendary Blues artist, Michael Pickett from Crystal Beach, Ontario. The Groove Kitchen and Music Room’s owner Matt Storch was declining phone reservations and rearranging the Music Room’s furniture, throughout the day on Thursday, stating that the few tickets remaining would ‘only be available at the door on a first come, first served basis.’

Customers hurried [more so demanded] to claim dinner reservations hours prior to the exclusive house concert, just to get through the door. Though once inside, not necessarily were you permitted to stay, if you caused a ‘distraction’ during the performance, announces Michael Pickett. [Note to self: Proper Audience Etiquette during a Live Concert].

Just passed the ‘Cambridge’ Delta on Dundas and Hespeler highway on the route to Preston, Michael Pickett’s Delta Blues highway met the ‘steamy’ stage, right off the train at 9PM sharp, Westminster/King. Following a brief introduction from The Groove Kitchen’s host Matt Storch, Michael Pickett prepared himself on stage as he personally invited the audience to his home on August 30, 2009 for an outdoor concert to celebrate peace. He shared moments from last year’s stage built by neighbours, which featured ‘three blues singers, two opera singers and a tap dancer’ as an interesting act to follow this year.

Michael Pickett soon asked for a moment to ‘relax’, but actually transcended himself with his ‘beloved’ 1931 National steel-bodied Duolian guitar, and traveled to a place, his own awarded place, not many may want to aspire too - a state of melancholy, performing “Daddy Where You Been So Long”, stunning the guests. Michael Pickett, without a set list, worked the coarse and fierceness of lyric and instrumental traditions of a Mississippi Blues past time (song, bluesharp and guitar), with two microphones, a wooden stage, a Kitchen chair and ‘unplugged’, LIVE to a packed house. Michael Pickett told of a true story while in Nashville, of songwriting submissions with Gary Nicolson to Eric Clapton, titled: ” As Close as I Have Come.” Another popular hit was a dedication to G.W. Bush titled: “So Out Going, He’s Gone”, a salute to United States of America president, Obama.

Also in attendance at The Groove Kitchen and not getting out of their seats, was Mo’ Kauffey and the boys from West Memphis Suicide. Many photographers took turns, while trying not to disturb the essence.

Michael Pickett’s powerful conversation of acoustic blues will have pressed you against the wall. He can do this after three decades of practice, without permission. You will have wished you had the luxury of a high-top chair with a back rest vs. the bar stool, for stability on this spiritual train [transe]. Michael Pickett together with Mother Earth Management will prepare The Southern Tour, leaving tomorrow.
