The Groove Kitchen and Music Room - In The Groove
MAY 2008

Hello and welcome to the fifth edition of “In The Groove”, The Groove Kitchen & Music Rooms monthly newsletter. Thanks to those who have recently joined our rapidly expanding list of subscribers. April was a very exciting and productive month for us. The introduction of our newly created wine list combined with some fresh new entrees from our new spring menu made for some very satisfied customers. To read what Lea Miller of Dave FM had to say about her experience at The Groove Kitchen please visit her restaurant review blog at DaveFM.com. Thanks to your support The Groove Kitchen review was a huge success that amazed even the Dave Fm staff. There was a flood of very positive comments that made all of us at The Groove very proud of our efforts and very thankful for your support !

Photographer Bob Nolan continued the trend of keeping the Artist’s Wall alive with his thought inspiring canvas printed works. Due to our dedication to Arts & Culture, The Groove Kitchen has been chosen as one of three refreshment stops on the Cambridge Studio Tour being held in late September. Also, I have been involved in the Preston Towne Centre BIA promotional committee and have been given the go ahead to organize the first annual Preston Music Festival to be held on Saturday, September 20th. More details will become available in the coming months.

Maydaze are here and this year we have plenty of reasons to celebrate. Some highlights include a birthday celebration for yours truly. We will be celebrating the whole weekend starting on Thursday May 1st thru to Saturday May 3rd when Damefire presents, “Ticket To Ride”, a tribute to The Beatles. Back by popular demand is Trucker Mouth on Saturday, May 10th. These guys play all the classics as well as everyones current favourites. I personally can’t wait for Mr. Rick & The Biscuits with local openers The Heathens. If you're in town for the long weekend you will want to come down on Saturday, May 17th. This will be a great evening of folk inspired roots music. We will also be adding events on Wednesday nights with the first being a Stand Up Comedy Night on May 28. We want to help you get through hump day by supplying a few laughs to get you through the remainder of your work week.

The Groove Kitchen is no stranger to Charity events and April was no exception. Thanks goes out to everyone that supported our bartender Gillian’s cause for Juvenille Diabettes. On her Birthday last Friday she was able to raise funds through customers who wished to buy her a birthday drink. All proceeds went directly to the cause. Good on ya Gillian !

See you “In The Groove” - Matt Storch

What’s Hot In The Kitchen

Spring is a very exciting time for many reasons. Nice weather, long weekends, outdoor gatherings etc. For us at The Groove Kitchen it is an opportunity to keep our menu fresh and exciting. This weekend we will be launching our new Spring Dinner Menu. Please read Lea Millers restaurant review for some specifics. Don’t be shy, come on out and see for yourself why so many people have been raving !

Here are a few comments from some who have experienced the vibe :

Cathy said : I'm hooked" conveys my sentiments exactly! What a breath of fresh air....an escape from all of the pub food with fine dining prices! At the Groove you get fine dining at reasonable prices. John is an incredibly talented chef and a great guy! I order something different each time I go and am always thrilled! Matt makes you feel welcome from the moment you step in the door! The music is ALWAYS great, the ambiance unrivaled and the decor warm and inviting! It has become "our place" to go and we bring back more people each time!! Congratulations Matt!

Lori said : Congratulations Matt, John and Girls! The Groove is the place to be if you love great food, fantastic atmosphere and love music. A new and different alternative to the chain restaurants in town! Try it once and love it forever!

Thomas said : Quite impressed with the cusine from the appetizers to the main courses. I generally eat vegetarian while my spouse is totally vegetarian and this is where The Groove was up to the task. We will be back for both a meal and entertainment.

Lea Miller's restauruant review for Dave FM:

The Groove Kitchen and Music Room! Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Walking into The Groove kitchen my first thoughts were "How cool is this room"? From the funky colours to the record albums on the walls and the Artists Wall it's a definate bright spot on King St in Preston.

Matt Storch the owner meets us with a huge smile. He tells me the Artist Wall changes monthly and features local artists and photographers. It's definitely a focal point in the room.

Formerly known as Cafe on King established in October '06. Chef John Wellwood became an addition a year later. The Groove Kitchen & Music Room is open for lunch and dinner most days and is dine in or take out. I must say I'm very happy we ate in. Matt and Chef Wellwood prepared a dinner of their newly created spring menu that will be launched the first week of May.

The appetizers start with "Roasted Red Pepper & Cream Cheese Canapes".

As we chat over this gorgeous and generous dish owner Matt lets us know that everything is prepared fresh from local ingredients and it's very evident in everything we enjoy. Also private parties are one of their great specialties. They have been host to many very successful cocktail and dinner parties for as many as 50 guests, complete with entertainment (we'll get to that shortly).

Next is the "Italian Tomato Soup garnished with Whipped Cream". Yes I said whipped cream! I know what you're thinking...and you're wrong:-) This soup is amazing. The texture screams fresh. It isn't overly sweet as you'd think with whipped cream. It the perfect combo!

Our final appie "Greek Salad mixed with In-House Creamy Garlic Dressing". You'll find this on both the lunch and dinner menu. It's a wonderful combination of feta, black olives, tomatoes, cucumber, spinach and garlic.

Lori from Abcon Wine presents us with a tasting of the wine list. First "Salvalai of Italy". Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie and the Valpolicella Clssico Superiore. Prices are reasonable from $7 a glass to $32 per bottle.

The next flight was from Australia "De Bortoli Wines". Willowglen Chardonnay andmy favorite of the evening the Willowglen Shiraz. It's a full but velvety smooth red. These pairings were suited very well to our entrees.

We are presented with "Pan Seared Pork Medallions" glazed with Maple & Apple. Served with Mashed Potato, Steamed Asparagus, Brazed red Cabbage and Curry Glazed Carrots. Sweet meets meat! With chunks of apple and sweet maple syrup my guest simply says "I love it"!

Next is "Atlantic Salmon Fillets with Sesame Seeds" served on a bed of Steamed Julienne Vegetables and Rice Noodles. I would order this again and again. The salmon is perfect as are the rice noodles. There is just a hint of spice and I guess I could simply say "I just love it". :-)

As we are enjoying our wine the band is doing sound check. It's singer songwriter night. Here's where I get to the Music Room:-) Live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Friday is Open Mike Night beginning at 9. Saturdays, various band bookings. Matt's band "The Usual Suspects" host the night. Where else in this area can you have a house band with a horn section?

It's evident that Matt the owners' first love is music from the interior of the restaurant to the fun named items on the menu.

As we enjoy our "Strawberry Shortcake Martini" dessert we also enjoy the entertainment.

The Groove Kitchen & Music Room is not something you can pigeon hole. It's laid back, family friendly (there was a lovely family with a young child dining beside us) and has food to rival any downtown Toronto Bistro. Add in the eclectic atmosphere and entertainment and after one visit....you'll be back as will I.

Their goal everyday is to create a positive, casual environment rich with food, art and entertainment in the company of friends. GOAL ACHIEVED! The prices are very reasonable. Appetizers start at $4.95. Dinner entrees start at 10.95 For a full menu check out the website: www.TheGrooveKitchen.com In two words. I'm hooked.

Hours of operation Monday & Tuesday 9 am-3 pm, Wednesday 9 am-10 pm, Thursday through Saturday 9am-2am. Closed daily between 3 & 5.
